Emporia is a community with a population of 27,000 and home to Emporia State University, an NCAA Division II-A school. Primarily known as a teachers’ college, Emporia State also offers degrees in business, including an accredited MBA program, nursing and liberal arts. Its enrollment is approximately 6,200.  Flint Hills Technical College, located in Emporia, serves over 1,000 students supporting the community with associate degree and technical diploma programs in a wide variety of technical education fields.

Located in the heart of the famous Bluestem Region of the Flint Hills, Emporia is considered an outstanding location because of its proximity and easy access to the three major metropolitan areas of Kansas -- Wichita, Topeka and Kansas City. Emporia is located on the Kansas Turnpike, Interstate Hwy. 35, U.S. Hwy. 50, and Kansas Hwy. 99. Emporia is the seat of Lyon County. Emporia serves as a major manufacturing and trade area for over 85,000 members of the surrounding area.  Other major Emporia manufacturing employers include Tyson, Dolly Madison, Detroit Diesel.
Emporia has cultural, educational, and recreational facilities including two libraries, a museum, nine public schools, community recreation and aquatic centers, two golf courses, a zoo, TRYSA Soccer Complex, Trusler Softball and Baseball Complex, numerous sports fields, 18 parks with more than 250 acres, and seven nearby lakes and reservoirs. Organizations such as the Emporia Arts Council, Community Theatre of Emporia, the Emporia Recreation Center, and The National Teachers’ Hall of Fame provide many special events.
